Several NOGRS members enjoy running G-Scale Live Steam Engines. The “Steam” page explores this aspect of model trains.
Q: What gauge / scale are these locomotives?
A: This is G Gauge (like LGB) and scales vary from 1/13.7 to 1/32.
Q: Are the locomotives scratch built?
A: Most locomotives you see operating come ready-to-run while others are kits. Some skilled machinists do scratch build their locomotives.
Q: What fuel do they use?
A: Butane is the most common and arguably easiest fuel while alcohol and coal are also used.
Q: Who makes them?
A: Accucraft, Aster, Roundhouse and Regner are the largest manufacturers.
Q: How much do they cost?
A: Roughly $649-$7,500+ new. Some entry level locomotives can be found for < $1,000 while many mid-range locomotives are $2,000-$4,000.
Q: What is a common entry level locomotive?
A: The Accucraft Ruby (0-4-0T) is a highly recommended starter locomotive and can be found for around $700 ready-to-run.

Q: What type of supplies do you need other than fuel?
A: This will largely depend on the complexity of the locomotive, at a bare minimum; distilled water, steam oil, lubricating oil, two syringes for filling water/oil and a butane gas filler adapter.
Q: Who are some of the major US dealers of G Scale live steam locomotives and supplies?
A: While many dealers may have some limited offerings, The Train Department and Live Steam Station are the only two major US dealers.
Q: Where can I learn more?
A: Talk to us! Otherwise, online forums such as MyLargeScale.com and GScaleCentral.net along with Facebook groups like Gauge 1 Live Steamers have a wealth of information.
